Glen Haasdyk Fireman Canada Posts. I've come across the plans for the MDC Marion steam shovel kit. This is one of their kits produced in the 70's and 80's.
Has anyone bought this kit? I'm wondering what MDC car components were included. If I could figure out that I could build this kit myself with parts scavanged from Ebay, swap meets and junk drawers. Yes, I made the mistake of buying it. IIRC you got a caboose body, one of their 26' fish belly flat car and a crane boom and suggestions on how to build the rest.
It's only make-believe. Do you still have the kit? I'd like to see a picture of the contents and the box front if possible. I'd like to see a picture of the contents and the box front if possible I have a kit, I have taken photos and applied them to my blog. Click on the link below and scroll down to the bottom of the page, I would post them here but have grown tired of people complaining about the pictures being too big.
I see now that there are a few parts that are unique to the kit like that crane boom. Maybe I'll look elsewhere to build a ditcher, like the Rio-Grande Models kit. The steam shovel kit was one of the earliest models I tackled when I first got back into the hobby several decades ago. I can recall the note on the box "additional materials required by modeler". And how! I was disappointed in the box contents - a box car shell and metal chassis and a few other bits, including a boom from an Athearn ton crane.
The materials list was a great help, as I didn't have any of the items. The Athearn crane boom was an option if you didn't want to scratch the shovel's boom. What was kind of misleading was the heading photo in the multi-page instructions, of a shovel made from their parts but which was in no way shape or form what their instructions showed you what to to.
I learned a lot from the instructions, how to cut styrene circles, etc. I replaced the body with one I scratchbuilt, added detail all over the place where I could. The doors open and close, the rear shelf closes, etc. Here's the finished product: So if anyone decides to try the Roundhouse kit, please keep in mind what you'll get! Thanks Bob. I did come across the pictures of your project, I hadn't seen the in progress photo until now. That would probably be considerably cheaper that trying to acumulate all the detail parts to make an MDC version even close to that detailed.
Opps my mistake. I was looking at an old website. Don't remember posting photos of my model in the past, a hazard of getting old I guess! I also have the Rio Grande Models shovel, its quite a bit smaller than the one made from the Roundhouse kit:.
I like the detail on the Rio Grande Models kit. Did you add anything to it? I don't think I added anything to this model. Bob, Both models really came out great. One is all white metal, I believe. Now to find them My name is on at least three of the instruction sets for the kits.
Cordially, Gerry. Thanks for that link, Gerry. I have about 8 of the 3 in 1 kits on the shelf, including this kit Hi Bruce, well I couldn't just let a misinterpretation of who owned the website.
After all the new owner of MDC abandoned manufacturing of the kits and furloughed a bunch of Americans when they moved manufacturing of rest the line to China. I put the instruction sets online some time ago because a few people asked about them via email. Still hoping to build them someday. Also let me comment here on the photographs above; Damn fine models there!
Beautiful models! Still have the Dremel tool! Snitz Forums
