Breast milk was uniquely designed for human babies, and many studies have shown its health benefits. In our quest to increase breastfeeding rates here in the US, which are not as high as we want them to be, we encourage new mothers not to use any formula. This is all good, as often, if we can get mothers and babies through those first few days and weeks without formula, they can both get used to breastfeeding and make it work. But as we encourage breastfeeding, we need to be careful to keep the big picture in mind and not demonize formula feeding. In a study recently published in the Journal of Pediatrics , researchers studied babies who had lost a significant amount of weight after birth, which, while common, can be dangerous.

  • You ought to read the story yourself, but the case it makes against organic foods comes down to five basic points.
  • The effort to reduce access to mammography screening has been going on for decades and has intensified in the past few years.

When my son was five weeks old, I found myself sitting on the floor of a room filled with cushions and yoga balls, holding him in my arms while exposing my nipple to a roomful of other women. We were in the back room of a cheerful natural baby store, but there was a feeling of desperation in the group of women, each one cradling a newborn baby.

This unlikely sisterhood was gathered for a weekly breastfeeding support group. My son, Nathaniel, loved to breastfeed so much that he spent about 10 hours a day at it.

But for some reason, breastfeeding had become intensely painful. I was riding an intense wave of fatigue and anxiety, and found it hard to consider anything but finding a way to continue nursing. I would have felt like a failure to do otherwise.

I decided to try breastfeeding but not put any pressure on myself. If I had been able to step back, I would have said there was no reason to put myself through the stress and pain.

And I would have been right. The study compared outcomes among siblings and found no significant difference in 10 of 11 long-term health outcomes between children who were breastfed and those given formula.

Breastfeeding is now akin to providing developmental toys, serving organic meals, and limiting screen time: a parenting best practice. He thrived, zooming to a top percentile on the growth chart. And so I nursed around the clock. Nate was a fussy baby but anytime I put him to my breast, he was instantly soothed. So when breastfeeding became painful, I was conflicted.

I desperately wanted to better share the baby care with my husband. But it was hard to think about depriving Nate of something he so clearly enjoyed. We realized a tiny milk blister was the culprit. Slowly, the pain finally disappeared. By the time Nate was four months old, a feeding took 10 or 15 minutes instead of an hour.

And I grew to love breastfeeding. Instead of feeling like a painful sentence, it became a welcome break in my day where I got to hold and cuddle my boy. Nate is now 22 months old, and he still breastfeeds occasionally.

It is no longer a quiet, relaxing experience; he bounces around, often nursing for less than 30 seconds at a time. Nate now spends much of his time running, climbing, and jumping. Nursing is a time when he wants me to hold him close, when he touches my face and chatters to me. And to me, pleasure is the thing. Unlike formula, all of the vitamins and minerals in my breastmilk are in a form that my baby can easily absorb.

This means that even seemingly minute levels of vitamins and minerals in my breastmilk are bioavailable — able to be efficiently utilized by my baby. A recent article in Consumer Reports was clearly influenced and placed emphasis on the issue of overdiagnosis in advising women to follow the USPSTF guidelines [ 52 ]. An op-ed piece by Welch in the New York Times [ 53 ] was coordinated with the publication of his paper, and a recent article in the Sunday Magazine section of the New York Times by a writer who voices doubts about the importance of early detection, referencing Welch and others [ 54 ] shows that these papers have been promoted to the public and will no doubt discourage some women from participating in screening.

There are rumors that some European countries are using the paper by Bleyer and Welch to argue against any breast cancer screening. The analysis used in this paper is fundamentally flawed, and the conclusions are not scientifically supported. The paper should be withdrawn by the New England Journal of Medicine. Daniel B. The Case Against Breast-Feeding - The Atlantic

As a reporter who focuses on early childhood development, I was immediately intrigued by this finding. At first, I thought I might write a quick story about it. But it does mean that a large majority of US mothers breastfeed their children at some point. And many mothers think it is important. After controlling for maternal intent to breastfeed, the researchers found no difference in the health outcomes in the two groups.

Quartz spoke to four outside experts in epidemiology, statistics, and social demography. They also disagreed with one another about the conclusion that breastfeeding may not be as impactful as we have been led to believe. What they all agreed upon, however, was that the Population Health study had serious limitations. One concern that many cited was the small sample size of about 1, expectant mothers.

Critics also point out that the study measures infant health through only three factors, all of which are self-reported by the mothers. This raises the possibility of inaccurate reporting for things like antibiotic use or ear infection prevalence. She suggests formula in Belarus may be worse for babies because drinking water there is historically of poor quality. As Annalisa Merrelli writes for Quartz :. When breastfeeding mothers feed their babies exclusively with formula, they quickly stop producing breast milk, making it impossible to revert back.

This makes formula particularly problematic for poor mothers, who may not be able to buy sufficient amounts of the product, and end up watering it down or feeding the child smaller quantities, which then leads to malnourishment.

In this context, breastfeeding has been shown to save lives. That means there may be very good reasons for women to keep choosing to breastfeed, even if it turns out that Raissian and Su are correct in saying that some of the benefits attributed to breastfeeding are inflated. Otten and Lanting, the researchers at TNO, acknowledge that any research that could seem to contradict breastfeeding dogma can be fraught. But science is not meant to accept wisdom.

As Purtill and Kopf write:. The largest of these studies pdf , conducted by researchers at Ohio State University, did not find meaningful positive effects of breastfeeding. They looked at 11 measures of child wellbeing, and found essentially no discernible difference between the breastfed and non-breastfed.

Breastfeeding requires a huge time and financial investment that many women make because they believe they are giving their child the best possible start to life. They could also go a long way towards tackling the economic and racial dynamics of the breastfeeding debate, whereby poor women, or women of color, are shamed for not doing what wealthier, white women do for their babies.

It also reflects, and reinforces, the divisions of race and class that have long characterized American social life. In our conversations, Raissian takes care to clarify that the point of her study is not to discourage women from breastfeeding. Her goal, she explains, is to jumpstart a conversation about which of the benefits attributed to breastfeeding if any have been overstated.

This reporting is part of a series supported by a grant from the Bernard van Leer Foundation. This post has been updated with clarification about Belarus drinking water.
