Examples of shamisen genres include nagauta , jiuta , min'yo , kouta , hauta , shinnai , tokiwazu , kiyomoto , gidayu and tsugaru. The body is small and particularly square-shaped, with a particularly thin neck, which tapers away from the strings just as it approaches the body. Generally, the hosozao is used in nagauta , the shorter and thinner neck facilitating the agile and virtuosic requirements of Kabuki.

Hosozao shamisen especially built for nagauta ensembles are often simply known as a "nagauta shamisen. As its name implies, the neck is slightly thicker. As the neck approaches the body of the instrument, the distance between the strings and the fingerboard is maintained, unlike the hosozao , where it tapers off. The fingerboard ends abruptly, and the rest of the neck curves sharply into the body of the instrument.

The result is an extended fingerboard that gives the chuzao a higher register than the hosozao. It is also an "all-round" instrument that can actually be used across many genres.

In these genres, a thicker neck facilitates the greater force used in playing the music of these styles. The futozao of Tsugaru-jamisen is quite a recent innovation, and is purposefully constructed in a much larger size than traditional style shamisens, and its neck is much longer and thicker than the traditional nagauta or jiuta shamisens. The bachi used for nagauta shamisen are made out of three possible materials, i. While many nagauta teachers do not approve of the use of plastic, if ivory is unattainable and wood is still out of price range, plastic will suffice.

Jiuta bachi are made entirely out of plastic or ivory, or plastic and tortoiseshell bekko , or ivory and tortoiseshell. Jiuta bachi are the easiest identified because they are the longest, the widest and also have a deep indentation where the tortoiseshell meets the handle.

There are sometimes also jiuta bachi that are made with a buffalo horn handle. The material however makes no difference in the sound. Gidayu shamisen uses the heaviest and thickest bachi , which however is not as wide as a nagauta bachi. The bachi used for tsugaru-jamisen is the smallest. Koma come in many heights. The higher the koma , the louder the sound will be, and the harder it is to control a rapid "sukui". The higher koma are not suitable for beginners. Koma for nagauta are fashioned out of only three materials, i.

Because of ivory's volume and vibration it is normally used by a teacher or tate-jamisen lead shamisen , so that the other players can follow their tone and signals. Plastic is becoming increasingly harder to find simply because it does not produce a desirable sound when compared to shari koma. Jiuta Koma Heights used: 2. Other heights may be available if specially ordered. Koma for jiuta are made out of a few select materials, i.

Blackwater buffalo horn does not have a significant sound difference when cut in the "jiuta koma" style, and is far less popular.

Many people believe that for jiuta , there is not a great sound difference between the two, but there is a high change in vibration. Shari is used from time to time in practice, but never for jiuta performances. Tsugaru koma are very easily identifiable due to their unique structure and use of two different materials. Tsugaru koma are very thin in width, and are not very high. The base is usually made of either bamboo, smoked bamboo, or a wood of some kind, while the top half in which the strings pass through can be made of ivory, bone, or tortoiseshell.

Because of the thickness of both the strings and neck of the futozao shamisen , the Tsugaru bridge in general tends to be longer than the others. One should not confuse a gidayu highest koma made, fashioned out of black buffalo horn or kiyomoto koma looks exactly like nagauta koma but is much wider at the base with a Tsugaru.

Shamisen used for traditional genres of Japanese music, such as jiuta , kouta , and nagauta , adhere to very strict standards. Purists of these genres demand that the shamisens be made of the correct wood, the correct skin, and are played with the correct bachi. There is little room for variation. The tsugaru-jamisen , on the other hand, has lent itself to modern use, and is used in modern genres such as jazz and rock.

Recently, avant-garde inventors have developed a tsugaru-jamisen with electric pickups to be used with amplifiers, like the electric guitar: the electric tsugaru-jamisen [5] has been born.

Today the strings are made out of steel to make a better sound and the drum heads are made out of plastic to avoid breakage in a performance.

As in the clawhammer style of American banjo playing, the bachi is often used to strike both string and skin, creating a highly percussive sound. The shamisen is played and tuned according to genre. The nomenclature of the nodes in an octave also varies according to genre.

In truth, there are myriad styles of shamisen across Japan, and tunings, tonality and notation vary to some degree. Honchoshi "Honchoshi" means "home tuning" or "base tuning," and it is called so because other tunings are considered derivatives of this one tuning.

For honchoshi , the first and third strings are tuned an octave apart, while the middle string is tuned to the equivalent of a fourth, in Western terms, from the 1st string.

An example of this is D, G, D. Ni Agari "Ni agari" means "raised two" or "raised second," and this refers to the fact that the pitch of the second string is raised from honchoshi , increasing the interval of the first and second strings to a fifth conversely decreasing the interval between the second and third strings to a fourth.

An example of this is D, A, D. San Sagari "San sagari," which means "lowered three" or "lowered third" refers to tuning the shamisen to honchoshi and lowering the 3rd string the string with the highest pitch down a whole step, so that now the instrument is tuned in fourths, e. D, G, C. Instead of having a set tuning, such as on a guitar i. G, D, A, E , the shamisen is tuned according to the register of the singer, or simply to the liking of the player.

The shamisen player can tune the shamisen to whatever register desired, so long as the above conventions are followed. As a consequence, tablature for each genre is written differently. For example, in min'yo style shamisen, nodes on the shamisen are labeled from 0, the open string called "0". However, in jiuta style shamisen, nodes are subdivided and named by octave, with "1" being the open string and first note in an octave, starting over at the next octave. The nodes are also labeled differently for Tsugaru style shamisen.

To add to the confusion, sometimes nodes can be "sharped," and since the names of nodes and their positions are different for each genre, these will also vary. Consequently, students of one genre of shamisen will find it difficult to read tablature from other genres of shamisen, unless they are specially trained to read these kinds of tablatures.

In traditional vertical notation, Chinese characters and older symbols for dynamics are used, however notation from Western style music notation, such as Italian names for dynamics, time signature and the fermata have been imported.

What tuning a work calls for is usually indicated on the tablature. The shamisen can be played solo or with other shamisen, in ensembles with other Japanese instruments, with singing such as nagauta , or as an accompaniment to drama, notably kabuki and bunraku. Both men and women traditionally played the shamisen. The singer-narrator role is often so vocally taxing that the performers are changed halfway through a scene. There is little notated in the books maruhon of the tradition except the words and the names of certain appropriate generic shamisen responses.

The band underwent multiple lineup changes before the original four members reunited in As a result, a band called Asia Featuring John Payne exists as a continuation of John Payne 's career as Asia's frontman from until Wetton's return in After the break-up of King Crimson in , various plans for a supergroup involving bassist John Wetton had been mooted, including the abortive British Bulldog project with Bill Bruford and Rick Wakeman in In Bruford and Wetton were reunited in U.

Their self-titled debut was released in But by January , U. Rabin, in a filmed interview included in the DVD Live , said that his involvement with Asia never went anywhere because "there was no chemistry" among the participants.

The band's first recordings, under the auspices of Geffen record label head David Geffen and Kalodner, were extremely popular with record buyers, yet considered disappointing by music critics [12] and fans of traditional progressive rock, who found the music closer to radio-friendly album-oriented rock AOR.

However, Asia clicked with fans of popular arena acts such as Journey , Boston and Styx ; Kalodner had once introduced Wetton to Journey's short-lived frontman Robert Fleischman , with a view to Fleischman becoming Asia's lead singer. As they worked on material together, Fleischman was impressed by Wetton's singing and felt the voice best suited to the new material was Wetton's own.

He left Asia amicably. Rolling Stone gave Asia an indifferent review, [14] while acknowledging the band's musicianship was a cut above the usual AOR expectations.

Asia's eponymous debut album Asia , released in March , gained considerable commercial success, spending nine weeks at number one on the United States album chart and selling over four million copies in the States alone. The album sold over 10 million worldwide and has never been out of print. Both tracks went on to become stadium favourites at United States sporting events. In the United States the band sold out every date on their debut tour, which began at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York [15] on 22 April , continued in theatres but quickly expanded into massive arenas because of high ticket demand.

MTV also played Asia videos on heavy rotation—as many as five times a day. Both Billboard and Cash Box named Asia's debut the 1 album of the year. However, neither the second album, Alpha released in July , nor any following Asia album could repeat the chart success of the first release. The video for "Smile" also scored heavy MTV play. However, Rolling Stone panned Alpha as an over-produced commercial album, [16] while others lamented that Howe and Palmer were effectively reduced to session musicians.

Alpha received indifferent reviews from various critics, while still attaining platinum status and reaching 6 on the Billboard album chart. In October , Wetton was forced out of the group on the heels of the comparatively disappointing sales of Alpha. The band stated that Wetton quit; Wetton countered that he was fired by phone and there is no universally agreed upon version of what happened.

Wetton later revealed one factor may have been his alcohol dependency. In any event, the next leg of their United States tour which had begun in the summer but shut down suddenly on 10 September after a performance at Pine Knob in Detroit , scheduled for the autumn, was abruptly cancelled, reportedly because of low ticket sales.

Lake's stint with the band was very short-lived - he had essentially only covered the concert as a favour to Carl Palmer, and because Geffen Records had "offered me so much money there was no way I could refuse it.

Having been out of Asia for three months, Wetton was re-recruited following Lake's departure; he returned on the condition that Steve Howe was ousted from the band. For a while, Asia considered continuing as a three-piece without a permanent guitarist, inviting guest guitarists such as Jeff Beck and David Gilmour into the studio.

Meanwhile, Howe went on to brief success with GTR another supergroup, this one formed with former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett , and produced by Downes.

The third Asia album was tentatively titled Arcadia , but during production it was discovered that that name was being used by a forthcoming spin-off project from Duran Duran. The retitled Astra , released in November , was not as commercially successful as the first two albums. The record label cancelled the projected tour because of lack of interest. The band charted another single with " Go " No. The music video was another hit with MTV but in this Asia lineup folded, bringing the group to an end for the time being.

Wetton is quoted as saying "[ Astra ] did really well in Sweden Wetton resurfaced in January with an album recorded with guitarist Phil Manzanera , Wetton-Manzanera , based on material that had been originally intended for Asia.

Also in , Wetton played with Phenomena on their Dream Runner album and landed a number one hit in South America with the Phenomena single "Did It All for Love", also appearing in the related music video. Asia were also credited with contributing the Giorgio Moroder produced track "Gypsy Soul" to the Sylvester Stallone film soundtrack to Over the Top , although Wetton was the only band member involved.

Wetton and Downes' attempt to restart the group in with guitarist Scott Gorham formerly of Thin Lizzy and drummer Michael Sturgis ex- A-ha fizzled when they were unable to land a worldwide recording deal.

Downes who was working on a project with Greg Lake was not available, so keyboards were played by John Young. Guitars on this tour were handled by Alan Darby who was replaced shortly after by German guitarist Holger Larisch and Zoe Nicholas and Susie Webb were brought aboard to provide back-up vocals.

Unlike Wetton's later anger at Asia continuing without him in the s, this lineup was viewed favourably by other Asia band members. The band toured the former Soviet Union in November to play in front of 20, fans on two sold out nights.

A video was planned but scrapped because various problems hampered the single's chance at the Top Asia received the RIAA Gold album award for Then and Now many years later, but the initial response was modest as the album failed to dent the Top The first album with this lineup was Aqua , released in June Howe returned during the sessions having just left Yes again, but Palmer would leave soon, committing to an ELP reunion, and was able to play on just three songs.

Drummers Simon Phillips and Nigel Glockler then completed the sessions. Downes' environmentalist single "Who Will Stop the Rain? The tour was successful enough to warrant the band's continuation. The group released Aria in May , which featured lead guitarist Al Pitrelli once again, who would leave Asia during the short Aria tour. The Aria album did not fare well commercially and the ensuing tour was limited to four concerts.

Ex- Simply Red guitarist Aziz Ibrahim took over during the tour. Aria also introduced new drummer Michael Sturgis, who had been involved during the band's aborted reunion and had appeared on some of the sessions for Aqua.

Aria was not released in the United States until May Amid the lost equipment, a vault containing unreleased material was found intact. The band decided to release the material in two discs, Archiva 1 and Archiva 2. The album was released on Resurgence Records but there was no tour because of lack of interest. The group's lone promotional performance in conjunction with the album occurred on 19 April , when Downes and Payne appeared with guitarist Elliott Randall on the Virgin FM radio programme Alive in London to play the song "Never".

An all acoustic album, Live Acoustic , was recorded by the group at Stadthalle, Bruchsal , Germany on 21 September and released in December that featured a lineup of Downes, Payne, Ibrahim, and drummer Bob Richards. In there was talk of a reunion of the original lineup minus Howe. The original proposition included Dave Kilminster on guitar, who had previously toured and recorded with Wetton. While Howe was interested in participating, he was unable to because of his busy schedule with Yes.

This reunion did not take place and John Payne continued to carry on Asia with Downes uninterrupted. Wetton and Palmer did, however, get together to form Qango , which included Kilminster and John Young, although the band was short-lived. In May the band put out an all instrumentals album called Rare.

The single "Ready to Go Home" was barely distributed. Asia then signed with Recognition Records. In and Asia toured for the first time since , including their first United States dates since In the summer of , Downes and Payne undertook the "Asia Across America Tour", which received some media attention.

FCC incident picked up some unexpected exposure on the Internet. In an acoustic Asia toured once again featuring only Downes and Payne. In the full band toured in Europe and the Americas playing settings ranging from small clubs to medium-sized theatres. In the United States attendance was poor at best. The new band started work on an album, tentatively entitled Architect of Time , which was originally planned for release early in , though subsequent developments would cause this project to be shelved.

Half of this material ended up being released on the album Window to the Soul in August under the new band name of GPS , which was an acronym for the three players involved: Govan, Payne and Schellen.

After this, the three continued on as Asia Featuring John Payne in In early , Downes left for a reunion of the original band lineup under the Asia name, a breakup that Payne described as "painful". Downes, Wetton, Palmer and Howe continued to perform and record as Asia thereafter. The official websites of each band reflect a split between the shared history of Payne's tenure with the band, as the reunited Asia acknowledge only pre- and post-Payne albums, whereas Asia Featuring John Payne claim Payne-era — albums Aqua through Silent Nation as part of their own discography.

Downes and the other three original members Wetton, Palmer and Howe convened a group meeting in England in early in anticipation of formally reforming for work that year. And after a slew of rumours, they announced that this original lineup of Asia were planning a CD, DVD and world tour to celebrate the band's 25th anniversary. The band appeared in October on United States cable channel VH-1 Classic and began a world tour largely focused on the United States The band secured ownership of the Asia name and toured under the description of the Four Original Members of Asia.

In a interview, guitarist Steve Howe states, "This is the real Asia. There have been other incarnations of the band, but this is the one that the public truly embraced". The tour began on 29 August in Rochester, New York. A limited edition release available only at Best Buy stores also included a DVD of all the band's music videos. The reunion tour continued into with venue size based on the success of the shows, where the band was mainly playing in clubs and theatres. Many of these sold out, including all seven dates in Japan.

In mid, all four original members Wetton, Downes, Howe and Palmer went into the studio to record a new album, marking the first recorded material from all four original members since 's Alpha. The world tour also featured a couple of the new songs. The album cover featured Roger Dean's illustration and design.
